Hijama Therapy

Hijama (Cupping Therapy) is also known as application of "Singhi or Pachhna" (horns). It involves creating suction through a manual hand-held plastic device on the skin using cups (glass, plastic, rubber, silicon cups, etc.). A cup is applied over the surface of the skin and a vacuum is created by fire or suction.

The morbid matters are diverted from one location to another or pain is relieved in case of Hijama bila Shart, whereas morbid matters are evacuated from the body in case of Hijama bi'l Shart. This process is believed to help remove toxins, improve circulation, and balance the body's humours and rectify the temperament of a particular organ and relieve pain, etc.

1. Hijama bila Shart (cupping without scarification / dry cupping)

In this type of cupping therapy, a vacuum is created within the cup either through the application of fire heat (Hijama bi'l Nar / Hijama Nariyya) or through a manual hand-held plastic device / electronic suction pump (Hijama bila Nar). Notably, this method does not entail any scarification over the skin; rather its purpose is Imala'-i-Mawad (diversion of morbid matters) and analgesia.

2. Hijama bi'l Shart (cupping with scarification / wet cupping)

In this type, the vacuum within the cup is generated through the manual / electronic suction pump. Notably, this method involves minimal superficial scarification over the skin. Its purpose is Istifragh-i-Mawad (evacuation of morbid matters), Ta'adil-i-Mizaj (moderation of temperament), Musakkin-i-Alam (analgesia), etc.
